Tanzhe Si (Temple of Pool and Zhe Tree) is Beijing's oldest Buddhist temple. In fact, some people believe that the temple predates the city. The main complex is built on a hillside, with a hall devoted to a different deity on each of three levels. Most of the temple's current buildings were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At one time, Tanzhe Temple was one of the most important temples in the country.
